Just saw another Polanski's great. I am glad the master's still got the thing.
The atmosphere of political intrigue and paranoia is perfectly illustrated by the cold, stern architecture, the wet and empty island and the incongruity between what goes on in the villa and what's on the news. I especially enjoyed the futility being depicted in the hired hand's despair of having to collect and recollect the fallen leaves over and over again on account of incessant wind.
But all of this, neat trick as they are, is to be expected. What I treasure most (apart from the fact Mr Brosnan finally had the role of lifetime worth remembering) is the final embodiment of what serious politics and serious writing, either in the realm of actual or imagined paranoia, might have in common - absolutely nothing.
