Hello, Diary

Spent a sleepless night charting out the general thread of all 10 shows and am happy to say I am done. To those who have experience creating I simply nod my head in recognition of mutual joy; to those who have none: you also cry a little.

A little gem is the final one which discusses the role of the intellectual in such difficult times as war. I present this almost mechanically, simply reading four letters exchanged between two writers from Croatia and Serbia in '92, seasoned with quite famous tunes by Balašević.

"Writing is somewhat of an escape from freedom. I remeber Đilas saying in long ago 70s: Prison would do me good. I feel like writing prose."

If this turns out well, I am sorry to say this simply cannot be translated for it would obviously need to be - reenacted.

Cultural Expansion

Well, I've been busy creating. My fifth show is based on hilarious admission I have actually not read the book being presented.

Of course, it's an ancient trick. It really aims at exposing what Sartre mocked through a character reading books alphabetically - that far, the guy reached the letter D. The whole goal of any education has always been development of the ability to differentiate what's good and what's bad.

I also offered the show to other student radios within Croatia. When the new Gvmnt in Croatia was elected, one of commentaries ran as follows:

"True, the new government with their Twitter profile seems a brand new movie in HD, compared to the old one. But then again, the standard was so low it is not much of an achievement."

Rules to This Game

Well, I did try to be gentle: the radio shows include everything from gentle beckoning to philosophy to investigating the limits of the discussion.

However, the third episode on small towns inevitably "forces a mirror to community's face" and it is no true mirror. It is somewhat distorted to drive the message across. So I'm left wondering what the response will be: well, at least in my mind's eye, anything is possible - this ranging from cancellation of the whole show to furious reactions, especially if they cannot do philosophy but continue with everyday rabid politics - since the book author is Serbian. However, I still wager on good old apathy and silence.

But I have decided not to react myself to any possible comments in any way - I will air them as-is. My whole point can be summarised in something like: "People, we have 4 radio stations - let's use them." In the fifth episode I shall incidentally explain what public debate looks like in France.

However, one thing needs to be addressed too. During my music radio show days, there were always those friends who would change something. These I jocularly teased they obviously needed own radio shows. So, one additional reason is that I am overrepresented as it is.

Working Title

First Day

Dear All,

As you might know, last year I've had a music show at a local student radio station:  http://www.zvuchi-drugachije.com.hr/

This Sunday, and Sundays to follow, my second volunteer season is beginning, this time with a talk show on books and ideas:  http://www.egotrip.com.hr/

However, things started going a bit and the Ragusa radio offered me a future original programme show (this time for cash). So far I've got nothing, but I wouldn't enjoy a repeat of a kind. What follows is just an initial idea.

I was thinking about a contact show but radio shows are a bit like novels: it is no chatter - but must be significantly structured beforehand, with an element of improvisation.

Therefore, to cut the story short, I was considering an idea for a show with actual friends, some of who are real experts in their fields. The subjects, just like in previous shows would be quite different (I think you will all see where you belong):

- experience from university
- experience from a large company
- journalist experience
- a story on tourist board
- health of society
- books, publishing or libraries
- music in HR
- thoughts of a veteran
- church in England (foreign experience)
- entrepreneurship (in DU) or state institutions
- high schools
- foreign gaze on DU
- sport in HR

The show would, as the initial idea as I said, comprise of a part which presents my take done in actual cooperation with true journalists and a phone conversation. Naturally, none would expect that you say anything you would not be comfortable with in any way. Of course, you would have to prepare a little i.e. make a plan of what you would like to say and answer questions you would not be informed of beforehand so an actual conversation is staged. It would not go live so changes are possible.

Would any of you be willing to do something like this - at all? Just to stress, your name would be mentioned.

So, do let me know - and please do not be cross if you think the idea - plain crazy.

News. Glad Day.

I meant to write about death, only life came breaking in as usual. Just kidding - this actually being a quote of the immortal Virgina.

I meant to write about this idea for something about a talking translator. Imagine a comedy with a translator that has something to say all the time. Of course, he would also have to be cursed with metaphysical doubts.

But, my small life has some news to tell. I just agreed upon a gig at the commercial radio station of Ragusa. The idea is to engender a new talk show on "culture, culture of living and policy of culture, if you will."

A challenge - and I would be paid to boot. "Let's shame those tourists when they come over, not familiar with the language and with their non-descript radio programmes." Another joke, though it is always a race.

Okay, the celebrations almost over - it is now time to work. We'll see what will eventually come out of this.

The Warning

That the following should come with a warning is the result of the war we've had. Now we have to warn our countrymen we merely like - all good men and all good poetry.

(Actually, there's this portal I'm a member of and this guy jocularly noted his ambition is to emigrate to the Caribbean, smoke cigars, drink rum and - write bad poetry. Here's to that!)

Anyways, if there was an error I can identify anywhere, it's that the Communists failed to arrest Milošević. Early on. From there it's all downhill.

But who cares? The following is my favourite Serbian poem. (In a whisper: it's about me.)

Desanka Maksimović: A Warning

Listen, I'll let you in on my secret:
never leave me alone
when somebody plays.

I might start seeing
any eyes
as deep and soft
when they are very common.

I can start thinking
I'm falling into music,
so I'll reach
for just anybody.

It might seem to me
loving briefly,
for a single day,

is beautiful and sweet.

Or I can just give away
at the moment this miraculous,
so dear a secret
of how much I love you.

Oh, never leave me alone
when somebody plays.
It will seem to me somewhere in forest
all my tears flow once again
as some sprouting fountains.

It will seem to me there's a dark butterfly
that writes with its wing on heavy water
what some fear to tell me at times.

It will seem to me somewhere in night
somebody is singing and is touching my wound
with his bitter, bloody heart.
Oh, never leave me alone,
never alone,
when somebody plays.

Existing translation I found - here.

What Skill; Almost Forgot

Have you seen the film? A Serious Man is a rare movie that begins in medias res, and in the end recoils having no end, just like life.

But do you remember the final hard won blubbering answer the rabbi gives? Not so frivolous after all, actually the best the human race came up with so far.

As to "He's thinking," for whatever feeble or flashy moments I might have - this is what I enjoy doing - there's this documentary on the EKV, a very famous band from ex-Yugoslavia. Practically the whole band was wiped out on account of, say, drugs or AIDS.

Trust me, if you go to Serbia, just mention you like EKV - somebody is bound to buy you a drink instantly: such is the influence of someone who just loved life.

Where was I? Yes, so - a few years before the sad demise, they ask the lead what he would wish for if he caught a goldfish. This was the answer:

1 - that this never happened (the war)
2 - that I am healthy
3 - that I can make a living making music

I fully understand. And would wish for very much similair. So modest at first glance, it's actually asking for - all.

Nits and Grits of Egotrip

I love the fact that I'm doing the job of the Croatian Tourist Board. I mean, how it should be done. Imagine, if I had the funds to get private press clipping.

Indeed, if suspect once you start thinking you're the sole fountain, if I had a thousand people on payroll, trust me, one of two things would occur: either they would move mountains or they would be disbanded.

Then again, you might think me naive. You might say: you are not expect things of people. I really don't; I just love to prick a little.

But perhaps we should think again. As I was browsing the Will Hunting clips the other day I found a great scene with the real reason for doing something for yourself (and others):

- Don't give me that bullshit "I owe it to myself."
- You don't owe it to yourself. You owe it to me.

Told You He Was Good

Arrested in Own Mist

[by Tin Ujević. translated by Davor Juričić in 2012]

Arrested in own mist,
cloaked in own gloom,
each rushes to his own gist,
own star, own doom.
And children's holy play
is what every and all yearn,
happy cataract and stay
where innocence and ignorance learn.
To a pressing cloud,
to all that taints,
our tender hope is loud:
just be pure. Be like saints.
And without the Spirit there,
without any patron bids,
even with our flesh bare,
we must be like kids, be like kids.

Another Notturno, Quite a Popular Motif in Croatian Poetry

Notturno by Tin Ujević
[translated by Davor Juričić in 2012]

My forehead glows tonite,
Tonite my eyelids tears rhyme,
For my thoughts saw a pretty sight:
I'll die tonite of all that's sublime.

Within us the soul has no rest,
It is a lantern deep down sown;
We cry quietly as we know best,
And we die - we die alone.

Notturno by Matoš, here.

through clamour of streets filled with machines
through shrieks of madmen, the full midnight bill
i walk and blink -
and prefer to be still

the time is not right
to say anything light
so what if it is a pose
at least i make little noise

The Hypnotists

My afternoon more or less. Wrong time to have coffee; the whole cafe turned towards TV to watch handball. Yes, it's a bit eerie once you've decided that the audience is more of a spectacle than the game. I still prefer when they play cards.

We're fairly good in sports and, true, I'm neither particularly adept with the ball nor do I care for its movement. We're also somewhat of one big yokel: we watch Wimbledon on national TV when we have someone there.

But the real reason why I started hating the damn thing is because I decided losses made everyone less elated and more desperate about the situation in the country. Just like "regular" national pride, this was the usual cover-up for everything not really thought through.

I am familiar with fair play campaigns and do understand some of the beneficial effect. But, parodying the usual "Sports against Drugs," an interesting graffitti surfaced in Zagreb some five years ago: "Sports against Knowledge."

It's so great to know you're not a flock of one. But of course, none can be that original. Just recently I was recommended How I Became Stupid by a Frenchie. A darling idea: the character tries everything from religion to, I guess, shopping.

If something really needs to be done, I prefer the regular bar thing. Here's a great tribute to the Croatian poet Tin Ujević that follows the ancient connexion between literature and alcohol. This is in Croatian, but I'll try to find one of his poems translated.

I Need a Hero

So how did you like that 2,500 year old joke? Imagine, a touch of absurd in ancient Greece.

But, even though I just explained over coffee I would like to devote my time to finer things in life, the Devil would have it I open the newspapers as well.

And it seems to me my country is very much like yours. It's just that we do the decay with far less money. We also have this self-governing tradition as experience that, I tell you, you would bribe for to have it.

So what do I think of USA? That it's a disgrace, but you shouldn't recoil. I watched a documentary about 14 year olds who do crack. To exaggerate, you get out of your apartment and you get mugged or worse. A friend of mine said: "Gawd, it wasn't like that here even in '91."

As I said, not much different. Actually, if I tried summarizing, I would say it's all business as usual.

                              NICARCHUS

A deaf man went to law with a deaf man, and the judge was a long way
deafer than both. The one claimed that the other owed him five months'
rent; and he replied that he had ground his corn by night; then the
judge, looking down on them, said, "Why quarrel? she is your mother; keep her between you."

Ancient Greek Wisdom

XXXIV
                      THE ASTROLOGER'S FORECAST
                               AGATHIAS

Calligenes the farmer, when he had cast his seed into the land, came
to the house of Aristophenes the astrologer, and asked him to tell
whether he would have a prosperous summer and abundant plenty of corn.
And he, taking the counters and ranging them closely on the board, and
crooking his fingers, uttered his reply to Calligenes: "If the
cornfield gets sufficient rain, and does not breed a crop of flowering
weeds, and frost does not crack the furrows, nor hail flay the heads
of the springing blades, and the pricket does not devour the crop, and
it sees no other injury of weather or soil, I prophesy you a capital
summer, and you will cut the ears successfully: only fear the
locusts."

What I Do All Day

Was asked, so I'm letting one of my mentors answer:

So, nothing, really.

Hack Says..

Didn't I tell you how I love statistics? I love statistics. Of course, it is mostly blind to metaphysics, but a metaphysician in the end has to recourse to statistics.

This is none of that shallow preaching on how majority should decide - it's about the majority that inevitably decides.

Take a look at the world of famous interpretation. To reach any consensus about world literature, somebody has to reread all the works each time and explain himself. He must, for example, persuade others this is so.

Now add a touch of "imperfection:" scheming, prestige of being smart etc. and you get the full picture. But it's about statistics.

It's the same in any field. Gadamer explained imperfect understanding always happens: and what is true of ourselves is also true of others.

And in this quite practical, down to Earth sense (because none returned to tell us about something different to be feared) - we will be judged. We are, every day, indeed.

Some might take it lightly, but as a Croatian skier said yesterday in connection to cheating in sport: shame will remain. But look at how beautiful: we can be convinced of ill-deserved shame.

Primer

I'm ashamed of this post for it is quite elementary. It seems sorely needed though.

Today I heard something like "We have won."

The whole point of any, even malfunctioning, democracy seems to be the "recurring suspicion" that more eyes see more.
It is not, nor is anything else for that matter, about others seeing like you do - it's about a sense of community.
I do not even subscribe to those fundamental human things - because there is simply no need: all humans do have a moral compass. And finally - do see - even if the vision is somewhat blurry.

It's about faith in the human condition; one could say pompously: I truly do believe in the human race.

As for things concrete, I underwrite those facetious expressions like "I am left with hope I was wrong voting against the Union" and "Greetings from Slovenians! We fucked Yugoslavia up - we'll do the same with Europe."

It is hard indeed to switch perspectives once you are used to your identity. As I wrote, just the other day a politician had to be "reminded" he was opposition no more.
And now comes the honest "cliche" part: I'll play along, contributing what best I can.

Adult Content

Why don't we celebrate a little, regardless of referendum results? These should be broadcast in less than two hours. It's in order, after two afternoon beers.

No, I'm not uploading porn, though - as an aside - I'm seriously considering doing just that any day now. Facebook bans them but - it's really ridiculous - the propriety ban - I mean, if you asked 70% of world households, they would never ever put any of the greatest world nudes on their walls. And I'm such a carnal creature - is my excuse.

So, I wish I had the hyped-up version by Richard Cheese available, but unfortunately the original The Toyes will have to do.

If you have, like me, gone through a war, even as a civilian, you especially appreciate the lyrics of

I smoked two joints in time of peace and two in time of war,
I smoked two joints before I smoked two joints - and then I smoked two more.

For those squeamish and queasy - of course, weed is far from magic potion, though I now remember when crammed into a pipe it was funnily termed "the goblet of happiness" in the Leaves of Grass with Edward Norton.

But then again, coming back to the referendum, after ever futile session after session of the Croatian parliament (and I'm sure it's pretty much the same anywhere), one MP in Croatia was so exasperated he exclaimed citizens would probably be better off if they smoked once in a while.

Good, Good Writing

I do realise I have mosty crawlers visiting this site, but - who knows? - I have already stumbled into a German and a Brit studying albeit Serbian and they made me their friend.

So, if you should ever master the exotic tongue, this is an example of really good writing: http://www.novilist.hr/Komentari/Kolumne/Ladovina-Ladislava-Tomicica/Referendumsko-ludilo

As one cannot really separate writing from content, it is also quite a good insight into contemporary Croatia. And though somewhat of a backwater, I still argue Western media could "profit" from some of that shine.

Chicken or Egg?

Well, a little bit about me. After all, my radio show, even though I inherited the name, is called the Egotrip.

Whether a dog or a cat person is one of those primordial questions: though I go for dogs, I can't really decide.

But what I know is that life definitely lacks little background music and, yes, perhaps merry animation. This is what art does. And here's me (it's my blog), in a sequel to Not Much Up:

EU Day: Look for Logic and Intonation

I meant to write of how I love the Devil Wears Prada, and how ideas trickle down just like fashion ("Look at your cheap sweater. This blue was first showcased in Milan 5 years ago and now it came to Gap."), but this is too good to be missed.

It is precisely this arrogance that makes people pissed: http://boingboing.net/2012/01/22/irish-journalist-humiliates-eu.html

Do they know what they do? is the bonus question.

Ah, the Memory Lane

A horrible thing happened to me last night
I prowled as usual, bored
And sudennly, unplanned, there in the window
I went crazy for a blond
I sent kisses through glass to her furtively

What I will say next does not follow logic
She held my weener while I pissed
She propped me up when I fell drunk

I want just that she returns
I want the hours to go by
I want - I miss her so much
And I would like to find myself somewhere next to her

A horrible thing happened to me last night
I was in love more than dangerously
With a brown-haired bank clerk
I suppose soon to be mum

She graduated from a cheap college
There are days when she loathes the world
She always found a kind word for me
Made me happy

A horrible thing happened to me last night
I was in love with blond and brown equally
And no matter a shock or two
The party was god like
My name is the knight of missed opportunity
Pretty ladies come, see and go
And no matter a shock or two
My party was god like

A Poet from My Youth

neither good nor bad
there is no place for new ideas
for us
people call my name
i answer in a good mood
damn lies for the naive
and i don't care
i am not afraid
i cannot help a single one of us
and i don't care about the muck arguments
and money that you cannot do without
and i don't care
i am not afraid

i cannot help a single one of us

Still the Best and Safest Thing in a While

Donate.

DO Something!

Empathy goes only that far.

One really cannot experience the plight of the average citizen with above average means. We have recently had this scandal of MPs retiring early because of money. And the pension scheme was finally abolished (their salaries remain) - however, a few corrupt ones decided to use the advantage during the final day.

Our veterans' minister today went before a medical commission and declared he felt much better because of the work during the past year (PTSP) and felt his pension should be accordingly somewhat reduced on account of reduced disability.

Finally - an example! So tired of empty talk or dead silence, I wish we had more on world scale.

All Philosophy Students are Leftists

"We asked the local sociologist Marta Gregorčič about what the Union gave and what it took from the neighbouring country of Slovenia. Her vision of the Union is mostly negative after eight years. However, apart from the Union's policies, she is very critical of the relation of Slovenian elites regarding these, claiming they are not thinking through an alternative.

Do you think of yourself as a Euro-sceptical person? If so, why, please list three major complaints against EU.

Euro-sceptic is not the happiest term since it implies doubt, passive opposition and leads us to helpless watching instead of critique, articulation of issues. The dilemma we faced in Slovenia in 2004, and that Croatia faces today, was not the choice between entry or refusal of entry into EU. The dilemma is hidden in how one answers the following question: how does one clearly and decisively confront the policy of the Union, which - in reality - is a union of members with no joint policy? How does one stand against a policy that isn't there?

Despite this paradoxical question, what dominates is aggressive propensity of influential figures towards the expensive and inefficient forum of buerocrats, lobbyists and technocrats, the forum that failed to reach a joint economic, financial, social, cultural and other European policies, but follows the instructions of the megalomaniac machinery of the IMF, OECD, World Bank, European Bank and other international institutions spearheading the corporate draining of the periphery.

The dilemma is, therefore, to remain alone and in a way excluded from this vicious circle of draining the periphery in benefit of the centre, or enter the circus with full awareness of who will be damaged most, what the things that will be lost are, and what the things established on new foundations will be. Neither choice is sound. It is necessary to critically reflect, think and search for other options. It is necessary to break this agreed circle of tautological policies and open up new horizons. This is what movements and critics in Europe and the rest of the world do, while not much is happening in this regard in Slovenia. This is not merely about EU, but the unavoidable need to create an alternative to capitalism.

What do you think are the greatest advantages of EU in Slovenia?

It is difficult to look for advantages when the entry of Slovenia into EU was mere justification for certain drastic changes. The sole consistent line of Slovenian policy all the while is hidden in the desire to belong among the great - this was the case with EU, NATO, OECD. We are the only country that boasts consistent implementation of the Schengen policy, because of which refugees, immigrants and the "deleted ones" we created after independence were sent out.

The Bologna reform degraded university education in a degree unprecedented by any previous policy or reform of the university. This is why, a few years back, we were thrilled by colleagues from Zagreb, whose resistance to reform of higher education was far more articulated and radical. Greek students problematize the same questions since 2003. Subsidised agrarian policy based on oil is supplanting the indigenous seeds of plant cultures and introducing monocultural production, industrial cattle keeping is wiping out the cultural landscape and is radically decreasing the self-supply potential of the country. All attempts of structural reforms encroach upon workers' rights, because of which the share of those employed full-time is smaller today that the shares of other forms of employment, while migrant workers are exposed to slave-like forms of exploitation.

The whole of Europe is facing unemployment of historic scale, Slovenia likewise. Today, there is this largest share of people below or on the very verge of poverty. Small companies, freelancers and manufacturers go bust, while majority of large companies restructured in order to produce parts for products of large international companies. Social liberties should - according to the Lisbon treaty - be respected, but are however not proscribed, so social and other benefits for the poor, unemployed and excluded are lowered in Slovenia and other countries.

Along right-wing Eurosceptics, there are perhaps even more of those in Croatia who act from leftist positions: they don't want to participate in the dictatorship of capital, as rule of EU is often dubbed, i.e. the dog eats dog market; they fear commercialisation of public services, education etc. Is this a delusion?

In Slovenia, there was hardly any opposition to entry to EU; at the referendum we proved to be the greatest fanatics of integration. Right-wing and conservative scepticism exalted the nation and played the fear of loss of sovereignity while the opposite, left camp failed to articultae clear standpoints and critique, since Slovenia, ever since independence, is mostly about liberal standpoints which are further strengthened by greater requests for neo-liberalisation. What is freightening today is the fact that Finland brings home new funds and pilot projects after each negotiations with EU, that in Ireland each tree or park are supported by European funds, that most larger states have a whole range of supporting European institutions, while simultaneously our negotiators come back to Slovenia empty handed. Other countries accepted EU as an opportunity, as source of additional subsidies in development. In contrast, Slovenia made the greatest error as a country during accession to the integration that can be made.

Despite the fact that we do not participate in shaping European directives, during their implementation we are more Catholic than the Pope, just in order to avoid fiscal or some other penalisation.. Thus we implemented a range of inconsistent, unsustainable and detrimental measures, amoung which undoubtedly are the privatisation of public health (concessions), the system of public procurement which excludes home producers; we have only prevented the reform of the pension system through a referendum i.e. the introduction of the German "minijob" model (employment with a limited number of work hours, without paid benefits). Attempts to eliminate the historical role of unions have been unbearable during the past few years. Through gradual opening of borders for Slovenian workforce, highly qualified workers find employment in other EU countries, where they get higher pay for the same work along better conditions. Doctors thus emigrate from Slovenia in droves, which the Ministry of Health try to compensate with doctors from other ex-YU countries or Slovakia. This process shows that not merely capital is being concentrated in powerful European countries, big jobs and decisions, but intellectual capital as well. The centre drains the periphery, while the periphery simultaneously fights for survival. We have decided to become the periphery of EU.

To smo vidjeli u Grčkoj i Italiji, a vjerojatno ćemo to gledati i u drugim državama.

Neki savezi i kretanja u Italiji, Španjolskoj i Baskiji poznaju takve prakse.

Prigovaraju mu prevelik obujam i nejasnoće.

21 Jan 2012, on the eve of the referendum in Croatia

Miroslav Krleža

"At night, during intimate, half-loud conversations to myself, I have been unable to really logically justify why I have lately been so upset because of human stupidity. If others' stupidity were as unpleasant as own toothache, well, this could be somehow explained: rotten teeth spoil the mood, toothache renders you sleepless. But this?
- What do you mean 'this?'
- It's like this: everything in life is governed by deeper laws of nature which science has lately termed as 'natural laws:' why, for instance, buttered bread always falls on the side with butter? Coincidence? No! Law. A law of universe. Or: why does locomotive smoke always bend to the side where one is watching outside from a speeding train? These are, you see, questions to which there are no answers, because these are quite unclear problems, one could even say they are inexplicable, while human mind is sadly helpless, so if one gets winded about human stupidity, the case is he is probably not endowed himself. One needs not belong to cruel, half-literate "thinkers" who "think" the notion of rain is more materialist than the notion of god, and when they conceitedly - one could even say, with pathos - declare rain is merely rain i.e. that rain is no other thing than it is, meaning - "rain" i.e. that rain is a natural phenomenon and no god's rain - once this happens, one cannot utter a single wise word from the noise of this free-minded cockledoo, as if this transfer of rain into "natural phenomena" solved the last open question of the human mind since the first rain till today. Try saying to this "free thinker" that you are not clear about the notion of non-theological rain, and that you personally do not really believe in celestial water pumps of god's origin, but that you neverthelss prefer walking in rain to empty reasoning over others, this gentleman inquisitor will next slit your throat in name of "free thought," just as he slit it yesterday in name of some other imperative.."

Morons of One Nation

Read Huff again yesterday. Just the headlines, I mean - it's really unpalatable. Apparently an American politician is accussed of things "European."

As an aside, one of more disgusting things "American" I find to be different marketing gurus and nickel self-help books. These pipers are just the opposite of any real "European" tradition indeed. Don't take me anywhere, please.

And the garish design of the "paper" resembles one big "European" folk fair itself: lots of blogs here, an opinion and videos there. That's really not how one does it, but I am actually mistaken: of course it resembles the first "American" mega-department store.

But there's more. Poets always secretly believed what is true for them individually is true for the world. It's just they never dreamed the entire globe would do this for money.

So I'll make an "American" decision today and not go for this "European" standardization.

Well, we got ourselves an underground hacker group that are the news of the day: now, this seems like something straight out of young Asimov. I can already picture some future battles around fields of servers.

The preceding article is, of course, slightly alarming. And it is fairly difficult for anybody to have any clear thinking here. But, that said, would it be logical that such a rift occurred in the US?

Interview With Darko Rundek, in Novosti

Somebody asked me once: Are you a pure Croatian? Fuck me, I'm thinking to myself, who in Europe is pure? I'm sure Mongol hordes have sown a lot of seed here, not to mention Franks or Turks. So to speak of nations in terms of blood - this is idiotic. There is this historical process which defined certain standards in a territory and you are richer for being part of it. You can exchange information with more people and communicate using same codes. National identity means someting to me if it makes me more free.

I am now trying to picture getting a street named after me when I have died and frankly - I couldn't care less.

Life on loan, democracy that says nothing, citizen in capacity of consumer who feeds ever growing machinery - all of this multiplies into the end of capitalism. Alternatives are so far away from this system and the basic principles of its functioning that I do not know how they could be realised without severe rifts.

I Want You!

Let's raise the stakes up!

Created two more blogs, and I'm inviting anyone coherent to join in.

Writer's Writer deals with more highbrow stuff, real writing experiments.

Not Another Parrot Blog is open for political commentary.

Let me know, and I'll add you to author list; no anonymity.

Hope these will not be still-born. And if they are, as Larson immortally said: "If a tree falls and no one is there to see, does anyone care?"

Avoid the Arduous One: It's All Writing

subtitled as Everybody Wants to be Manager

Well, this was too much perhaps. I guess any righteous individual would love to do something big, huge, but - one is then reminded so would a mass murderer on rampage. I have always found it funny that Slobodan Milošević listened to My Way while imprisoned.

As I once sang, "everything great [actually] cannot be seen." I wrote of wind and love; I guess you could do the same for say wrath. "You can only see how they sear the body."

Those who do charity work are familiar with the fact the following paradox applies: the less of you there is, the greater you become. If you don't take credit, the credit is greater. If you renounce power - you're worthier. (This however works until life is frayed: Gorbachov once again might be a silly old fart to some.)

I was told this sounds quite Christian; I was actually interested in pragmatics only. But please note any marketing or fashion works exactly the opposite way. With my radio show, I should strive to become a celebrity.

I also once read beauty of art is when, despite the bald and the sweating one in front row, orchestra sounds like heaven for a moment. Life is so inclusive.

Today's Sermon

An Album With Surprisingly Good Lyrics

->
After years of expensive education
A car full of books and anticipation
I'm an expert on Shakespeare and that's a hell of a lot
But the world don't need scholars as much as I thought
Maybe I'll go traveling for a year
Finding myself, or start a career
Could work the poor, though I'm hungry for fame
We all seem so different but we're just the same
Maybe I'll go to the gym, so I don't get fat
Aren't things more easy with a tight six pack
Who knows the answers, who do you trust
I can't even separate love from lust
Maybe I'll move back home and pay off my loans
Working nine to five, answering phones
But don't make me live for Friday nights
Drinking eight pints and getting in fights
Maybe I'll just fall in love
That could solve it all
Philosophers say that that's enough
There surely must be more
Love ain't the answer, nor is work
The truth eludes me so much it hurts
But I'm still having fun and I guess that's the key
I'm a twentysomething and I'll keep being me

->
If, I expected love, when first we kissed, blame it on my youth
If only just for you, I did exist, blame it on my youth
I believed in everything
Like a child of three
You meant more than anything
You meant all the world to me

If, you were on my mind, all night and day, blame it on my youth
If, I forgot to eat, and sleep and pray, blame it on my youth
If I cried a little bit, when first I learned the truth
Don't blame it on my heart, blame it on my youth

->
Next Year,
Things are gonna change,
Gonna drink less beer
And start all over again
Gonna pull up my socks
Gonna clean my shower
Not gonna live by the clock
But get up at a decent hour
Gonna read more books
Gonna keep up with the news
Gonna learn how to cook
And spend less money on shoes
Pay my bills on time
File my mail away, everyday
Only drink the finest wine
And call my Gran every Sunday
Resolutions
Well Baby they come and go
Will I do any of these things?
The answer's probably no
But if there's one thing, I must do,
Despite my greatest fears
I'm gonna say to you
How I've felt all of these years
Next Year, Next Year, Next Year

.
I'm playing them during my show on Truth and Method.
